Here is a simple recipe for making dal (lentil soup), which is a popular dish in many parts of India:
Ingredients:
1 cup split yellow moong dal/tur dal
3 cups water
2 tomatoes, chopped
2-3 garlic cloves, minced
1 tsp cumin seeds
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp coriander powder
Salt to taste
2 tbsp ghee
Instructions:
Rinse the dal in cold water until the water runs clear, then soak in clean water for 5 minutes.
Add 3 cups of water in a pan and add soaked dal to it. Bring the dal to boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for about 10 minutes.
Heat the ghee in a pot over medium flame. Add the cumin seeds and mustard seeds, and fry until they start to crackle.
Add the chopped onions and garlic, and sauté until the onions turn translucent.
Add the chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, coriander powder, and salt, and cook until the tomatoes turn soft and mushy.
Add the dal to the pot and sauté for 2-3 minutes.
Serve hot with rice, and garnish with fresh coriander leaves if desired.
